What is ID06?
ID06 is Sweden’s industry-wide system for identification and access control, mainly used in the construction sectors. An ID06 card shows both who a person is and which company they work for, and is required to enter most building sites. The system was introduced to strengthen workplace safety, prevent undeclared work, and promote fair competition (ID06 AB, Byggföretagen).
Why is ID06 important?
In Sweden, ID06 is a central part of compliance. Without a valid card, contractors are denied access to construction sites. The card connects directly to the employer’s registration, ensuring traceability and that social contributions and taxes are handled according to Swedish rules (Skatteverket, Arbetsmiljöverket).
New rules from 2026
From the beginning of 2026, stricter identification requirements will apply when ordering ID06 cards. Passports or national ID cards will be the only accepted documents. BankID or other e-identification will no longer be sufficient, since they do not confirm nationality – a key factor in determining one’s right to work in Sweden (ID06 AB).
For those who already have a valid ID06 card, nothing changes until the card expires. When renewing, however, the new rules will apply. Discussions are also ongoing about a final revalidation date for all active cards, but no decision has yet been announced (ID06 AB).
What this means in practice
- For consultants: Always ensure you have a valid passport or national ID card. Without it, you cannot obtain or renew your card.
- For agencies and businesses: Be prepared for stricter checks on both identity and employer registration. This affects onboarding timelines and may increase compliance requirements.
- For existing cardholders: Current cards remain valid until expiry, but renewal will require updated documentation.
Today, more than 700,000 valid cards are in use, representing over 120 nationalities. Around 1,500 new cards are ordered every day – showing just how central ID06 is to the Swedish labour market (ID06 AB).
